Reme
Campos

For the past four years, London-based photographer Reme Campos has photographed a group of teenage friends who identify as transgender.

A project that has been previously shortlisted in both the Taylor Wessing and the BJP Portrait of Britain, Reme’s Trans(ition) series has garnered recognition across the creative industry. Natural, understated portraits captured with de-saturated colour, Reme has a quietness in her approach to photographing her subjects. Encouraging the teenagers to reflect on how they wish to present themselves to the world, Reme asked the sitters to write or record something about their lives, experiences, and their journey with gender identity. Some of the teenagers spoke, others wrote and performed poetry – each creating a connection with the photographer and sharing their personal stories.

In Reme’s soulful work, we see a synergy between her projects, a beauty that visually connects her stories together. Reme’s Trans(ition) series and ‘Flowers in the dark’ speak to each other, together they fill a creative space exploring the themes of growth and transition. There’s a softness across the colour pallet and a calmness that unifies the imagery. We couldn’t choose between these two favourite projects, so in bringing them together in our own personal edit, we hope to shine a light on the intrinsic beauty in Reme’s work, and her sensitive portrayal of these young people’s journey.
